Cloud computing is supposed to be the in-thing for 2010. Well it has been around for a while but surely will replace conventional desktop applications in the near future. I have made the switch and have never been happier.

What is cloud computing? For me it simply means having all my files, emails, pictures and other stuff online via web based applications that make them accessible globally at any time from any PC or Laptop.

I always found it difficult to move away from the traditional office apps like Microsoft office (especially outlook) … until I got my new Dell laptop (finally after a long wait).

These days, email marketing is an art form. Spam is a problem everyone, including the likes of hotmail, google, yahoo and others are fighting. So when is comes to email marketing, ensuring that you manage your reputation as a legitimate sender is key!

Email delivery has nothing to do with the email marketing software you use.

IP Reputation

When you send an email, it is not send by your domain but through the IP address your domain/email service resides on. If you are on a shared hosting server, the servers IP and your reputation is shared by many. Also servers that are specifically set to send e-mails generally have Reverse DNS & SPF records, support greylisting, and other features.

If anyone on that server (IP) spams individuals and the IP gets blacklisted by “Spam Cops”, it affects everyone on that IP/server.

Forward and Reverse DNS

Every domain resolves to an IP address but make sure your server has proper reverse DNS settings configured. DNS is an important way of establishing identity on the internet. Spammers will often forge domain names or IP addresses to hide where their mail is coming from. To detect these forgeries, ISPs often perform what’s called a reverse DNS lookup on incoming messages.

Example: an incoming message claims to be coming from the 202.186.96.56 IP address, an ISP looks up the domain to see if it resolves to embunweb.com. If it doesn’t, the message may be a forgery — or the sender may just now have the correct DNS entries. The result – email is either rejected or categorized as spam.

SPF Records

Sender Policy Framework or SPF is a more specific DNS entry that lists which IP addresses are approved to send mail for your domain. It is being used by more & more by the big three (Gmail, Hotmail & Yahoo uses it) and others to detect if a message is spam or not.

Greylisting

Greylisting is not quite the same as blacklisting. In fact, it is a very powerful spam prevention method used by mail servers.

Basically, the server receiving your email will “temporarily reject” any email from a sender it does not recognize. If the mail is legitimate, the originating server will, after a delay, try again and if sufficient time has elapsed, the email will be accepted. If the mail is from a spammer it will probably not be retried since a spammer goes through thousands of email addresses and typically cannot afford the time delay to retry.

Sending Rates

If you do have 1,000s of legitimate subscribers, it is a good idea to throttle your sending rates (as you can do with our email marketing solutions).

Most important, if you are serious about email marketing in Malaysia or anywhere in the world, make sure you work with people that know the industry and technicalities. So What’s so different about Google Buzz?

According to Google, the new Google Buzz accessible through google.com/buzz offers a whole new features to its gmail users. According to some Google Buzz users who have already tried the new Google service, Google Buzz combines social networking—all within the existing Gmail and Google.com infrastructure.

Buzz lets you share updates, photos, links, and pretty much anything else you’d like with your Gmail contacts; it’s an easy way to follow your friends, too. When you click Buzz in your Gmail account, you’ll see the stream of posts from people you’re following, and a box for you to post your updates. Here’s a run-down of the basic functions:

• Post some buzz: Click in the text box next to your name, and share what’s on your mind.
• Comment: if you see something in your stream you’d like to comment on, just click the Comment link under that post. Your comment will appear alongside it, and the author of the post will be notified.
• Like/unlike: If you don’t have something in particular you want to say, but you just happen to like someone’s post, you can click Like. It will show up on that post that you liked it; if you have a change of heart about something you’ve liked, you’ll see an Unlike link; just click it to remove your name.
• Reply by chat: Click this link if you’d like to send a Chat message to the author of an update
• Delete comments: You can delete comments people have posted to your buzz, or comments you’ve posted.
• @replies: Write @ in front of someone’s username as a way of directing your buzz at that person (it will automatically go to their inbox). You can only use @replies with people who are in your contacts, and other followers won’t be able to see the Gmail username.
• Mute: You can mute buzz that appears in your inbox by enabling keyboard shortcuts and pressing the ‘m’ key while you’re reading it. Muting keeps the update from continuing to appear in your inbox as people reply to it.
• Email: Click the down-arrow to the right of a post, and select Email; a new Gmail message will open with the buzz content in the subject and message body.

Hot! Google made Google Buzz available to your mobile phones too. Google Buzz works on mobiles right from Google.com on Android and iPhone browsers, and it locates your position from a one button press.
